Where we dive
East Niagara River
When we dive Wednesdays after work, divers board at Gratwick park, and we dive the
East Niagara River. There is an old ferry crossing just upstream
from the Holiday Inn on Grand Island, and stuff from the ferry is still
found in the river.
Entry from shore upstream from Holiday Inn, G.I.
Three water intakes are located on the Grand Island
side, and it is possible to see all three in a single drift dive.
Isleview and Niawanda parks are on the East River, and are the location for
boat races; it's a good spot to find a racing propeller.
Downstream from Niawanda is Tonawanda Island; boaters
enter the Niagara from Tonawanda Creek/Elicott Crk/NYS Barge Canal
at this location. There are also small wrecks.
Sometimes we dive further upstream, passing under the South Grand Island
bridge. A lot of junk (tree debris, wire rope, tarpaulins, tires, bicycles)
and some good stuff (anchors, guns) can be found under this bridge.
About 1/2 mi. upstream from the South Grand Island bridge, on the Buffalo
side of the river there is the wreck of a wooden barge, in water about
20 ft deep and which comes within 3ft of the surface. Fish (and fishermen)
like this spot, and the wire rope on the barge guarantees that some of
the fishermen leave their anchors behind.
West Niagara River
On Saturdays, since divers board at city dock Niagara Falls,
it is easy to access the West River by going under the North Grand
Island bridge, through a gap in the breakwater, and around the North
end Grand Island. We may combine a few passes (short dives)
under the North Grand Island bridge, with a West River dive.
Buffalo Harbor
Some Saturdays, we dive the Buffalo harbor, the boat picking up divers at
LaSalle Park, Buffalo.
Dunkirk Pier
The club regularly does winter dives at the Dunkirk city pier.
