Homework 3

15 problems due Monday, February 16th, 4pm, in box in Math Department Main Office, 244 Mathematics Building

1.6: 45, 46

2.2: 2, 4, 8, 21, 24

NOTE: For 2, 4, 8, include (a) critical points / equilibrium solutions (b) stability of each cp /eq soln (c) sketch of solution curves showing all behavior types (d) analytic solution to DE.

2.3: 13, 14, 15, 16

2.4: 4 but use initial condition y(0) = 2

Ch. 1 Review questions: Each of the following differential equations can be solved by two of the methods introduced in Chapters 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6.  For each differential equation, find general solutions using two different methods, and then reconcile your results.

R1:

y' = 3(y+7)x^2

R2:

y' = xy^3 - xy

R3:

y' = (y^(1/2) - y)/tan(x)

Note: for R3, you may assume 0 < x < pi/2.
