Focus and Scope

Speleobiology Notes is an international, peer-reviewed online journal published by the Biology Section of the National Speleological Society. The journal specializes on brief observations on the natural history of subterranean organisms, such as predation events, episodes of reproduction, occurrence in unusual habitats or microhabitats, localized population extinctions, range extensions, new records of species at a given location, and many other natural history phenomena. The journal aims to serve as the primary outlet for much interesting and important information on subterranean fauna contained in the field notes of many speleobiologists, information deemed too fragmented, too brief, too basic, or simply too irrelevant to be included within full-length, traditional scientific journal articles. Speleobiology is a maturing science, much of its activity is discovery based rather than hypothesis driven.Transitioning from discovery based to hypothesis based science requires envisioning connections among seemingly disparate facts, connections that may reveal new patterns, patterns that then encourage formulation of new hypotheses on underlying explanatory processes. The editors of Speleobiology Notes hope that the journal will play a central role in weaving the fabric from which speleobiologist can draw exciting new patterns.

Peer Review Process

Each manuscript will be sent out for peer review prior to acceptance. The reviewers will be asked to judge the submission by scientific relevance to subterranean biology, and clarity of the data presentation, and discussion. In order to assure rapid publication of often time-sensitive data, reviewers will on average have maximum 3 weeks to complete reviews.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Info about the Journal

Users and readers should register to access the pdfs. There is no charge to authors, but donations to the NSS Biology Section by authors and readers are highly appreciated. We ask that each interested reader download individual articles directly from our web site instead of sending copies of previously downloaded pdf files to each other. This will allow us to monitor the number of downloads and gauge the extent of interest in the journal. The journal is also listed in the Directory  of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

Katharina Dittmar (SUNY @ Buffalo), and Steve Taylor (Illinois Natural History Survey) were critical in the implementation of the website, and the layout. The journal is sponsored by SUNY @ Buffalo. Currently, the editorial board consists of: Daniel Fong (American University), Katharina Dittmar (SUNY at Buffalo), Megan Porter (University of South Dakota), Mike Slay (The Nature Conservancy), Steve Taylor (The Illinois Natural History Survey), Maja Zagmajster (University of Ljubljana), and Matthew Niemiller (Yale University).
